Of this very thing I am convicted. I was at the grocery store and I was so baffled at what I saw. Someone was wearing headphones while he was grocery shopping. I then thought of all the times I’ve seen (and done myself) people wearing heapphones – while running, walking to class, on the bus to work, in the office at work, in a coffee shop, etc. When we put these on, we are telling the world to leave us alone. What we are doing is too important to be bothered with whatever is going on “out there.” [I know this is not the case in EVERY situation...just bear with me here...]

I’m not saying headphones are a bad thing, and like I said, I am highly convicted of this. But these days we un-personalize so much. We have automatic bank tellers, self-checkouts at the grocery stores…we even have automated recordings when we inquire about an issue we have with our credit cards. [Oh, how many times have I thought "I just want to talk to a person!!!"]

We have gone from sitting on front porch steps for long, deep conversations to an encrypted three word text message. We are keeping the world at bay and our hearts in check – we internalize ourselves and scratch the surface of casual conversation with our friends.

A song that has gripped my heard lately is “Give Me Your Eyes” by Brandon Heath. The chorus:

Give me your eyes for just one second
Give me your eyes so I can see
Everything that I keep missing
Give me your love for humanity
Give me your arms for the broken hearted
Ones that are far beyond my reach.
Give me your heart for the ones forgotten
Give me your eyes so I can see

Oh, to see the things, for just one moment, through the eyes of Christ. To be able to see the love, the joy, the beauty, the pain, the suffering, the hurt. How different would our own lives be? How different would our actions be? Our words? Our hearts?
