Christianity: Buffet Style
SCRIPTURE: Amos 1-3; Psalm 80; 2 Timothy 4
For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry. ~ 2 Timothy 4:3-5
OBSERVATION:
People will leave a church because they don’t agree with something. Sometimes it can be completely valid. Other times, they’re just running from the truth. It’s funny sometimes. We just experienced something, or we just did something and we need to share it with someone. However, there’s a specific response we’re looking for. That usually directs us to who it is we need to call. If, by some unfathomable reason, they don’t give us the response we want, we call someone else until we get thus response. We feel restless and incomplete until that particular response comes.
We look for the responses that will make us feel good. We treat religion, Christianity, like a buffet. We’ll take a little of this because it looks interesting, we’ll take a lot of that because we love it and it always makes us happy, but we’ll skip over that because although it’s good for us, it tastes gross. SOMETIMES, we even sneak in a little something from home to spice things up. But God did not create a buffet for us…He created a feast. And He has every intention for us to eat every last bit of it.
APPLICATION:
There are some things I don’t like about Christianity. Sometimes I think it would just be easier not to be a Christian and not care about so many things. But then I think about the reasons why God created things the way He did. I don’t understand all of it, but the things I do, I know He created it that way because He loves me and He wants to protect me. I need to listen to these encouraging words of Paul to Timothy, as they are God’s Words to me.
PRAYER:
Father, let me knot run from Your Words or Your truth. Give me the strength, courage and endurance to do the work You created me to do.
